NASCAR Driving Event
Daytona, Florida is the location for some of the NASCAR rallies, events that draw in crowds from all over the world to participate in some of the most dangerous car races on record. These events are packed full of safety regulations to protect the drivers form injury, but sometimes things happen and events take a turn for the worse.
NASCAR stands for the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, and was founded in the late 1940s. It is one of the most viewed professional sports in terms of TV viewings in the USA, and is broadcast in over one hundred and fifty countries. There are lots of different vehicles that participate in the sport, from stock cars to pickups, but the trucks draw the most viewers. The course has one hundred laps. A great deal of the cars never make the final lap such is the speed of the race.
But the last NASCAR event, the first meeting of the series, had spectators on the edges of their seats when a fireball tore across the track form the back of one of the vehicles, involving a dozen trucks in a scary pile up. Accidents happen on a regular basis, but it is rare that an incident takes up the width of the course and involves so many cars.
It occurred on lap seventy four out of one hundred, when a truck blew a tyre. The truck spun around and wiped out all the vehicles behind it. As more vehicles were drawn into the wreckage the show organisers feared that there would be casualties and fatalities, but all the drivers involved in the crash walked away unharmed; miraculous for the size of the crash.
